Nomadic Red Corner

Since its recent inception in 2021, Nomadic Red Corner has organized many artistic projects, events, artist residencies, and creative community development programs to dispel negative assumptions about the ger districts of Ulaanbaatar, densely populated areas on the outskirts of the city, the majority of which are typically comprised by rural-urban migrants and very low-income families. Generally, Ger districts are informal residential areas, often on the margins of cities in Mongolia, where people live in traditional yurts (gers). These districts are characterized by self-built structures, including gers and houses, and often lack access to basic infrastructure like central heating, running water, and proper sewage systems.

Nomadic Red Corner is a collaborative project between Mongolian Contemporary Art Support Association and Art Space 976+, initiated with the aim to bring art closer to the residents of the Ger districts of Ulaanbaatar city. Today, Ger districts are home to nearly 800,000 people. Given that these districts have limited access to utilities, infrastructure, green parks, and public spaces, the Nomadic Red Corner strives to promote artistic access and freedom to all residents living in Gers. The Nomadic Red Corner team believes that art can bring positive changes to all communities, cultures, and starved mindsets. Since 2020, Nomadic Red Corner has supported and established many new “artsy” neighborhoods across Chingeltei, Sukhbaatar and Bayanzurkh districts, covering around 24.000 sq.m. In these new neighborhoods, artists, art students, and volunteers painted streets and created artworks in these formerly desolate public spaces.

In 2021, Nomadic Red Corner established the International Artist Residency center in the Uliastai Ger District of Ulaanbaatar city. This residency program facilitates intercultural exchange between local and international artists, supports their research and artistic projects, and collaborates with local community to build long-lasting intercultural connections. In 2024— implemented by Nomadic Red Corner’s International Artist Residency and funded by EUNIC Mongolia, the Alliance Française Oulan-Bator, the Austrian Embassy in Beijing, the Finnish Embassy in Beijing, and the Goethe-Institut Mongolia— Nomadic Red Corner launched its International Program. The International Program aims to raise public awareness of climate change through various contemporary artistic practices occurring around the world. The first edition of the program took place in the Dundgovi Province, involving 8 artists from 5 different countries alongside the local community. Nomadic Red Corner also facilitates research trips to historically and contemporarily nomadic regions of Mongolia, revitalizing cultural memory of traditional nomadic practices.

Nomad Spirit
The international art program “Nomad Spirit” took place in Deren Soum of Dundgovi Province from September 21 to October 2, 2024. Initiated by the EUNIC Mongolia, with the aim to raise public awareness of climate change through contemporary artistic practices, the program brought together over 260 participants, including 8 artists from 5 different countries (Mongolia, Germany, France, Finland, & Austria), as well as local schoolchildren, residents, administrators, and visitors from Ulaanbaatar. After immersing themselves in the natural landscape, environment, and the nomadic way of life, the participating artists had established their base in the heart of Deren Soum, a small administrative center with a population of around 450 people. While staying at Deren Soum, the project team was actively engaged with the organization of workshops, open discussions, and creative activities, focusing on local cultures, environment, ecology, and climate changes, involving over 200 schoolchildren and the local community of Deren Soum. A major topic of discussion was the responses of different countries, individuals, and artists towards pressing environmental issues, and how traditional nomadic lifestyles and philosophies can be adapted to modern life as response to these problems.
