House of Tulip
House of Tulip is a nonprofit organization based in New Orleans, dedicated to providing zero-barrier housing and comprehensive support services to transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) individuals. The name House of Tulip contains a subtle acronym, which is central to their mission: “trans, united, leading, intersectional, progress,” or TULIP. Founded and led by members of the TGNC community, the organization aims to address the high rates of homelessness experienced by trans Louisianans and break the cycle through the support of donors and volunteers. Their groundbreaking short documentary film (released in 2023), merges artistic vision with community outreach and activism, focused on the safety and wellbeing of trans and GNC folks.
The organization’s short-term vision focuses on building community by raising funds to acquire and restore a multi-family property in New Orleans that makes necessary healthcare and employment opportunities accessible. This pilot permanent housing campus will house up to 10 TGNC individuals at a time. House of Tulip is also working to acquire a separate space to serve as a community center where TGNC individuals can safely access social safety net navigation, community programming, a hot meal, a shower, or a safe place to relax or do schoolwork in the greater New Orleans area.
In the long term, House of Tulip aims to provide sustainable housing solutions by operating as a land trust, ensuring that the housing they plan to offer remains affordable and benefits the entire city of New Orleans. The organization is also committed to offering pathways to homeownership for TGNC individuals, providing support throughout the journey from homelessness to stability. While initially funded through donations, House of Tulip plans to develop sustainable income sources to invest in its mission strategically.
