MediaSonyo ( “미디어소녀” )

MediaSonyo (meaning “Media Girl”) is a feminist community of women media artists based in Seoul, South Korea dedicated to amplifying the voices of underrepresented groups and navigating persistent disparities within the technology-driven arts environment. Committed to inclusivity and openness, MediaSonyo transcends geographical, national, and individual boundaries. The collective was founded in 2023 with a focus on women’s representation in the fine arts world, and with an aim to cultivate a platform for those affected by social inequalities in the arts and tech industries.

As anti-feminist sentiment, discrimination, and violence has been steadily rising in South Korea in recent years, groups like MediaSonyo are crucial to ensure the future of women’s equal inclusion in the arts and in tech. Ultimately, MediaSonyo’s goal is to establish a network of Korean female media artists that can create and connect with an international audience.

Generation that Generates
Curated by MediaSonyo, Generation that Generates was an exhibition at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design in fall of 2024. Using digital art and spatial experimentation, MediaSonoyo created an immersive exhibition experience, allowing viewers to explore the connection between the physical, spiritual, and technological world. The exhibition blurred the distinction between digital media and physical space to create a realm in which visitors could reflect on how their bodies interact with digital technology.
