Out North
Out North is a progressive multi-arts organization that offers a vibrant mix of contemporary visual, performing, literary, and media art, and engages in arts activism, human rights, community development, and life-long education. The organization partners with a diverse range of artists, community members, and organizations to deliver educational and forward-thinking arts programs that uplift alternative voices and keep Alaskans connected, informed, and actively engaged.
Out North advances contemporary art in Anchorage, uplifts underrepresented voices, and fosters cultural dialogue. As one of the city’s longest-running arts nonprofits, the organization currently produces pop-up art shows throughout the community and operates KONR-LP 106.1FM, known as “Out North Radio.” Created by Gene Dugan and Jay Brause in 1985, Out North began as a platform for LGBTQ+ theater productions to be shown to the public. By the early 1990s, the organization expanded its focus to include a broader range of programming—developing, producing, and presenting original local work across various art forms, including theater, visual art, literature, music, film, and performance art.
In 2011, Out North launched its Art House Residency Program in collaboration with 12 mission-driven arts organizations, fostering a creative hub for diverse artistic voices. The organization’s theatrical roots remained strong through its time at the Alaska Experience Theatre and Port View Hall, both retrofitted to support full-scale productions. These venues hosted everything from local plays to events for the Anchorage International Film Festival and smaller cinematic projects. A catalyst for art and innovation in Anchorage for more than three decades, Out North continues to collaborate with a multitude of artists, community members and organizations to offer educational and progressive arts programming that amplifies alternative voices and keeps Alaskans connected, informed, and engaged.
