Arts Ability Uganda (“AAU”)

Arts Ability Uganda (AAU) is a center for creativity, specifically working with Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). They do workshops and provide various types of collaborative art projects with PWDs, encouraging participants to make their own art in order to gain technical skills and provide employment opportunities through.

The main goal of AAU is to help provide a place where people with disabilities can feel included, as, in Uganda, people with disabilities are not offered employment. By using all forms of art from singing to dancing, to painting, and projects, AAU fulfills the role of a home for creativity and awareness. They work in urban and rural areas, going to villages and towns, creating a self-help initiative for PWDs to earn an income for not only themselves but also their families.

A few projects AAU has achieved include an artist residency which focuses on recycling projects (modifying taxis in urban areas to make them accessible for all), a computer literacy workshop, and much more.

Tailoring, Fashion House, and Shoe Making Workshop
Arts Ability Uganda offers many workshops to help teach important and practical skills for people— whether in employment or for their own personal fulfilment. One of the workshops AAU offers involves tailoring, fashion design, and shoe-making, in which individuals are taught skills like stitching, cutting, designing garments, crafting and stitching shoes, methods to afford clothes under conditions of poverty, and engage in entrepreneurship. After learning these skills, the individuals are able to enter into an annual fashion show to showcase what they have learned and to sell their products to the public.
