Progressive Voice

Progressive Voice is a participatory, human rights-based research and advocacy organization that connects community-based organizations throughout Myanmar and cultivates a network across civil society in the nation. Serving as a bridge and voice to the international community, Progressive Voice amplifies grassroots voices and advocates for rights-based engagement and policy in Myanmar and beyond. As the government in Myanmar is currently under a military dictatorship, Progressive Voice’s human rights advocacy work and coalition building efforts are invaluable. At the core of its identity, PV is a steadfast commitment to human rights principles, embracing an ethos of universality, inalienability, and absolute nature for the wellbeing of all people, regardless of identity. The organization actively upholds anti-discrimination policies, including discrimination on the basis of race, color, nationality, ethnicity, gender or gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, social standing, religion, or political beliefs.

Progressive Voice follows a gender-inclusive staffing policy and draws strength from the ethnic and religious diversity of its team, while prioritizing the development of a new generation of leaders in Myanmar, particularly from marginalized communities. This approach not only contributes to the long-term sustainability of the organization, but also serves as evidence of legitimacy of the team’s broader efforts toward building a federal democracy in Myanmar. The organization operates through principled, collective, and consensus-based decision-making, ensuring inclusivity and equality at every level. Its research is conducted ethically under a strict ‘do no harm’ framework, and it offers principled, independent policy analysis and recommendations that remain non-aligned with any political or religious institutions.

Featured Project

People’s Voices
This project amplifies and preserves the cultural memory of the many voices and collective struggles of the (unsuccessful) Spring Revolution in Myanmar, highlighting the courageous resistance of the people against the military junta’s coup in February 2021. Through art, poetry, and detailed archivist storytelling, People’s Voices documents and preserves the diverse and creative forms of protest used by the public, the powerful stories of fallen heroes, and the ongoing daily efforts of human rights defenders, religious leaders, and everyday citizens from all backgrounds in Myanmar. By sharing these narratives in English, the project aims to inform and mobilize international audiences to support Myanmar’s democratic resistance movement against General Min Aung Hlaing’s military dictatorship. The project also serves as an important archive of recently passed and ongoing methods employed by the people of Myanmar to reclaim their democratic state from tyrannical, corrupt, and violent state actors.
