Hāna Arts
Hāna Arts began providing visual art and crafts classes for the children of Hāna, Maui in 1991. Since then, the non-profit organization has expanded their programs under the umbrella of the Hāna Youth Center and then Hāna Cultural Center. By the time Hāna Arts incorporated in 1998, they were already offering classes in dance, Hawaiian and other world cultures, theatre, visual arts, and music to both children and adults. Hāna Arts often facilitates their artistic and educational programs in collaborative family settings, where generations can come together to learn and create. Today, Hāna Arts is recognized as the prevalent facilitator of art activity in Hāna and greater East Maui. They collaborate with many local agencies that serve the youth and local families of the region, as well as local schools, universities, and other larger art agencies within the Hawaiian islands and beyond. At the forefront of the organization’s mission is the intent to preserve culture and provide tangible outlets for the wealth of creativity in the region.
The Hāna/East Maui geographical area consists of a 30-mile radius of coastal communities, isolated by its geographical boundaries, rural lifestyle, and difficult mountain terrain. Hāna Arts nurtures the creative growth of local residents and works to provide opportunities that help them thrive, even in their relatively remote location. The organization brings together professional artists and educators from both the local community and across the globe, enriching the lives of the Hāna community, from keiki (children) to kupuna (elders) via classroom teaching, workshops, events, and other multigenerational and collaborative programs.
